Applying for a permesso di soggiorno involves several stages spread across weeks or months. Missing a step, or showing up to the Questura without the right documents, is the most common cause of delays. Here's the process broken down.
1. Get the Application Kit
The permesso di soggiorno application kit (the yellow envelope, or "kit giallo") is collected from a designated post office (Poste Italiane) that handles immigration applications, not every branch does.
2. Fill Out the Forms
The kit contains Modulo 1 and Modulo 2. These require personal details, your reason for stay, passport information, and in many cases your codice fiscale (Italian tax code).
3. Gather Supporting Documents
- Valid passport and entry visa (if applicable)
- Codice fiscale
- Proof of accommodation (rental contract or hosting declaration)
- Revenue stamp (marca da bollo)
- Documents specific to your permit type (employment contract, enrollment certificate, proof of income, etc.)
4. Submit at the Post Office and Pay the Fees
You'll pay the application fee and an electronic permit card fee at the counter. Keep every receipt, you'll need them later.
5. Receive Your Appointment Date
The post office gives you a receipt with a fingerprinting appointment date at the Questura, plus a tracking number for your application.
6. Attend Your Questura Appointment
Bring your original documents and receipts. You'll have your fingerprints and photo taken. For what to expect once you're there, see our Questura survival guide.
7. Track and Pick Up Your Permit
After the appointment, your permit is processed and printed. You can check status using your tracking number, or use an app like MyPermesso to get notified automatically instead of calling or checking manually.
